There's an article about Space Elevator (misnamed) technology in the July issue of Discover magazine. It's interesting to contemplate, but the technology has a way to go.

If the strength of the ribbon cable can be reached, it isn't as far fetched (technology wise) as launching a multi-stage rocket.

But what about the "anchoring" of this extremely strong, long elevator ? I would have thought that the forces would be phenominal - would bedrock, or whatever the anchor it to, be as strong as the materials they are using to build the elevator ?

Then again, this isn't slashdot, so perhaps I should leave my musings for there..
