I recommend that you don't use pass-through queries to access Excel tables; use a linked table.

if you need to use a pass-through query, all you need to do is create a new query, set it to "pass through", specify the full ODBC connect string to the Excel file in the properties, and then enter the SQL statement (pure text - no QBE grid) to select what you need.
