| You're probably going to get a lot of opinions on this one so I guess I'll start. First, regarding the tests you should look at Microsoft's website under training and check out their MCDBA tests. These give you a decent broad exposure to a variety of topics that a DBA should know and be proficient with. Depending on your timeline you might want to wait until they come out with their new set of tests for the new version of sql server. I don't see the point of becoming a DBA for SQL2000 at this point since it's going to be outdated. Now, having said that, the tests alone are not sufficient. I would be scared to death to have a DBA come in that had just passed the Microsoft tests and not had any real world experience. SQL has a great way of throwing all kinds of interesting quirks at you that you just can't get from the tests. You need experience before you're considered a decent DBA. Your best bet would be to pass the MCDBA tests then go for something like a junior DBA type position or even sql developer position so you can pick up some real world experience. Try to work on as many different types of things as you can so you get a well rounded set of experiences. Personally, I'd hire a DBA with 10 years experience who wasn't certified over a DBA who passed the tests but had less than 1-2 years of experience.Mike"oh, that monkey is going to pay" |
