Hi

I have a table with 6 columns, when i insert a row only 2 of the fields have data and the other 4 are NULL. The fields with NULL values are updated with data at a later time. Are there any issues with having a table two-thirds full of NULL fields?

Jill,

Did you really do all the designs for Wookey Hole?

Went up there for the first time a few weeks ago, even though I only live an hour away..

Oh, and your question has been answered..

To me NULL means "Not yet known, or will never be known"

Its different to Blank or Zero. That means we know, and its blank. Like the third line of someones address. But a blank telephone number would tell me they don't have one [seems unlikely] rather than "they didn't tell us what it is, yet"

I've probably over simplified it and will get roasted by my fellow SQL Teamers ...

Very true.

And you cant compare two columns of null values with one another

RickD, I didn't do all the designs for Wookey Hole, most of them were another guys work who draw the outline and i painted in the detail. The dinosaurs were scrounged from all over the place but i scrubbed them up and again painted on the detail. Nice that you checked out my website, any comments about that?

Hey Jill - with a CV like that can't you just pay someone to sort out a database for you.

It's quite a nice design, after looking around for a bit, the only bug-bear is that going back just goes back to the last pic you looked at (which means all the pics are loaded in seperate pages). Would be better if it went back to the last page you looked at instead..

Other than that, it is pretty clear and concise..

Put all fields to not null, and discover where the business process and data model can be improved.
