Greetings All,

I need an electronic book that provides advanced comprehensive coverage of SQL. It should provide many examples, particularly of complex outer joins and GROUP BY.

Can anyone recommend one?

TIA.

SQL Server Books Online can be found here:

http://www.sqlteam.com/redir.asp?ItemID=1849

You can also download SQL 2000 BOL here:

http://www.sqlteam.com/redir.asp?ItemID=6801

There are TONS of examples and comprehensive descriptions of all SQL statements and their syntax. If you have SQL Server installed then Books Online is already on your hard drive. It is not specifically geared towards advanced techniques per se, but it provides all of the fundamentals.

You could also try Joe Celko's column:

http://www.intelligententerprise.com/authors/search_Celko.shtml

He covers some stuff in his articles. There is also the DBMS Mag archives (same site):

http://www.intelligententerprise.com/dbmssearch.shtml

Joe had a column there also, SQL For Smarties. Much of the content is taken from Joe's book of the same name, which I heartily recommend. It's definitely worth the price. You can also look at...

The Guru's Guide to Transact-SQL

by Ken Henderson. It is AMAZING! Even Joe Celko says it is the best book on T-SQL ever written, and he's right. It is worth TWICE its cost. This is the ultimate T-SQL book; there are problems that boggle the mind, and the solutions are there, and usually a lot simpler than you would imagine!

Thanks for the links and the ref to Guru's Guide. It sounds great. I just wish I could get the entire text online (CD or download).

Perhaps I haven't been looking in the right places, but I haven't found any complicated/advanced SELECTs in Books Online. All of the outer join examples I've found are just between two tables.

I'm looking for some complex nesting examples that includes both inner and outer joins. If it's in BOL, please point me to the location.

Thanks to all who responded.

Here is a thought. Microsoft set something up a while ago where you could make your own ebooks by putting together chapters from their titles. I never tried it because they wouldn't license it to Australia (bastards) but it might be worth a look.

And then, of course, there are all the awesome articles (involving complex joins, cross tabs, Dynamic SQL, and much, much more!) that you can find at this site: http://www.sqlteam.com
