I am looking to upgrade our server to a dual processor box. At present we have one processor - one licence.

I understand that if you want to install a fresh copy of sql server in order for it to even install you need one licence per processor. However, what is not clear is what happens when you upgrade the box when the server is already installed. Do you still need the additional licence and what happens if you don't get the licence does the sql server fail to work altogether.

I found the following article on Microsoft Technet about fresh installs but doesn't cover upgrading of hardware.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2000/reskit/part2/c0461.mspx?mfr=true

Can someone put me in the right direction so I can give some meaningful information to my director. Perhaps an article you are aware of that explains this upgrade.

Thanks in advance

James

SQL Server licensing does not affect product functionality, only legality.
