Hi,

How can I read a file placed in a shared folder on a network from MS SQL Server Stored Procedure. Is there any kind of set-up I have to do. Can someone please help I am very new SQL Server stuff.

it will be best if you transfer the file from the shared folder to the sql server machine first, this will make your life easier without having to go through opening firewalls (if applicable), specifying unc path, at the mercy of the network stability etc

Depending on what's in the file, it might make more sense to import the file to a table using bcp.exe or similar.

That way you can select/insert/update/delete from it in the normal way from your sproc.

what do you need to do with the file ? Import into SQL Server ? You can take a look at DTS or BCP
