Hi, not sure if this is the right place to put this but as its the beginners forum I thought I'd take a chance.

What's becoming more evident to me is my weak SQL skills. I'd like some advice on the best place to learn properly. It's starting to become a part of my role and i'm struggling a bit.

Should I go on a course? I have a number of teach yourself books and an evaluation version of the software but is this enough? I've worked through the books but struggle to apply the book to the real situation i.e subqueries

How did the more proficient of you learn SQL?

I want to get to a stage where I can help others with their SQL problems rather than always being the one helped.

Any advice much appreciated.

We appreciate your effort to improve.
One way is to hang around this site and study the suggestions other people give. For a time, they seem obscure but fater than you think, you begin to get the idea and thinking behind the code. Break down the queries into smaller pieces and understand every little piece.
Then you realize you can write the same code.

Stay put and learn. After a while, you can contribute too! Don't be shy and think your suggestion must be a masterpiece of code. None of us did in the beginning.

Books? Search for "T-SQL, write, query, beginner" in GOOGLE and see what you find.

Welcome back.

I'm in Leeds

Thans for all the replies. I have this

http://www.forta.com/books/0672325675/

and this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/SQL-Pocket-Guide-Reference/dp/0596005121

So I guess its a good start. Like I said though, it's a case of applying the book to real life problems.
