visual studio 2005
how will i know what edition of visual studio i have? i have seen in connection strings the .\sqlexpress. does it mean that it is express edition? but the owner of my cd told me that it is not.

can u help me build my connection string?

when i uninstall visual studio, will my files be lost? or i can still access them when i reinstall it? because i'm planning to uninstall and reinstall it but i don't want my files to be lost. tnx

No. SQLExpress is a database engine (with certain limitations) for SQL 2005 which is packaged and installed along with Visual Studio 2005.

Uninstalling Visual Studio will not delete your project files.

To determine what version of VS you have - open Visual Studio, click on the help menu, then "About Visual Studio" at the bottom of the drop down.

The .\sqlexpress in your connection strings refers to the version of SQL you are connecting to from your project in Visual Studio.

Here's a sample connection string:
<configuration>
<connectionStrings>
<add name="MyNWind”
connectionString="SERVER=…;DATABASE=northwind;UID=…;PWD=…” />
</connectionStrings>
</configuration>

-simply rename the entry, replace the ... and northwind values above with valid values for your database

Your Visual Stuido project files shouldn't be deleted when you uninstall. They're (default) stored under your My Documents folder and should be accessible after you reinstall.

Regards,
John
