this is probably a newbie question but when im installing sql server on a basic win xp pro machine, can it act as its own local server to have its own databases?

the reason i want this is for development from my laptop.

if possible is there a guide around for this?

Yes, but you'll need to install SQL Server Developer Edition in order to run on XP.

On XP, yes. You'll get an error when you try to install it.

Check out the prerequisites for each version and you'll see what is required.

If it is a WinXP, It won't install the server component from Enterprise CD but only the client.

Developer Edition is not free. It comes with MSDN subscription or you can just purchase it.
