Thank you all for replying. Just one more question.Microsoft site suggeests that i download "Windows Installer 3.1." and For 32-bit platforms, install the "32-bit version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0." before installing SQL Server Express.Link for that pagehttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=220549b5-0b07-4448-8848-dcc397514b41&displaylang=enMy question is is it necessary to install windows installer 3.1 and "32-bit version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0." or can i skip that and directly install SQL Server Express.

You can skip those, but .net 2.0 gives you new features.

I installed SQl Server Express without installing "Windows Installer 3.1." and "32-bit version of Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.".After clicking on "run" it extracted file to a location to c:\ccf7eab....(which i am not able to find even after doing a search for that file) and got a message saying "there is no Microsoft .Net framework 2.0. Please install it before running set up". In the "Add/Remove program" list,i see "Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1"I don't know where to find set up file. And i don't see anything new installed on "Start--->All programs". Sorry if my questions sound too basic. I am new to this. Can anybody give me detailed information or guide me through the installation process please.

Just like the error says, you need to install .NET Framework 2.0. Go to the MS site to download it.Tara Kizerhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

No. If you do, you will have issues with applications that utilize .NET Framework 1.1.Tara Kizerhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

Why not save the downloaded file to your machine, use Winzip or some other tool to extract the files, then run the setup executable (whatever it is named)? The installations that I have don't do this, so I've never installed SQL Server this way.Tara Kizerhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

I did save it on to my machine. An application file named "SQLEXPR" got saved. when i run that file, as i mentioned before,it extracted file to a location to c:\ccf7eab....(which i am not able to find even after doing a search for that file) and got a message saying "there is no Microsoft .Net framework 2.0. Please install it before running set up". Nothing happens after that message, no short cut created, nothing on Start--->All programs or no more messages.I am downloading SQL Server Express Edition from herehttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=220549b5-0b07-4448-8848-dcc397514b41&displaylang=en

o.k i ran "SQLEXPR" again and went through the installation wizard with one warning message about "minimum system requirement". Now in "authentication mode " window, should i choose * windows authentication mode or* mixed mode(windows authentication and SQl Server Authentication"If i choose mixed mode, i need to enter password for "sa" log on. What is the password for "sa" logon.

You get to pick the password, not us.Deciding which authentication mode to use is a security thing. Do you even understand the difference between the two?Tara Kizerhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/

actually, i don't know the difference. i am new to this. i am installing it on my pc and planning to learn SQl. I thought if i choose "mixed mode(windows authentication and SQl Server Authentication", giving a easy password which i use regularly would be easy for me to remember. But as i am installing it just for learning purpose, i don't know whether to choose,* windows authentication mode or* mixed mode(windows authentication and SQl Server Authentication"can you give a link to the document which explains this or can you tell which option to choose considering that i am using it only for learning purpose and no valuable data is going to be stored. Sorry for very basic questions, i am still trying to figure it out.

In this case, I'd like choose mixed authentication so you can try all those features.
