Sounds like another way of stating the need to write queries in Transact SQL on the backend for use by applications. Try getting the book "The Gurus guide to Transact SQL" this is a good book for learning how to do that sort of thing. You should then play with Reporting services and building reports in Excel etc to familiarize yourself with that part.

What do you like to know in specific? It's a huge topic.

your best shot is to take some classes on databases as well as SQL language so you start understanding the terms. You can usually find decent classes through a university (extension classes) or at a decent junior college and they are typically fairly inexpensive.

You can also take courses that are product specific (SQL Server admin, Oracle admin, etc.) at training centers. These classes are usually more expensive than extension courses and are geared more for technical certification than general knowledge, so they may not be that good for a noob.

The class will be good for the big chunks of information. SQLteam will be useful to help you finetune your understanding.
