how to estimate query plan cost

Just select the option in Query Analyzer or Management Studio to include the estimated execution plan or the actual one. The estimated one is good for when you don't want to actually run the query. The actual one and estimated can be different though.

If you highlight the query and select "Display Estimated Execution Plan" from the context menu (or right click menu), you can display it on the SQL Server Management Studio or on the Query Editor for SQL2000
