Dear All,
please correct me if i'm going in a wrong way.

i need to upgrade my sql server2000 ent to 2005 standard edition.

1) i'm installing seperatly on the same server, and later i'l stop the service of sql server 2000 then detach the databases later attach in sqlserver 2005, then change the compatiability level to 90.

now my doubt is can i install 2005 with the same instance name of 2000?
after finishing the installation, is there anything to change at application or automatically it connects to 2005 instance? please let me know

thank you very much

If you are going from SQL 2000 to 2005, It is better to go with Backup/Restore than Detach/Attach which is safer. You can't have same instance name in same server but you can if you are upgrading to new server

Or perform in-place upgrade.

As well as moving the databases you might have to also script the sql 2000 users and run the script on your new 2005
