SQL Express is free although I doubt it lets you use SSIS or anything fancy. Check out Developer Edition of SQL Server. I believe it's about 50 bucks.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I guess what I need to find out is if I can use the installation CD that used for the server on the client machine since I am just going to use it for development. I know SQLExpress is free, but you are right it doesn't come with SSIS. It does however comes with BIDS which only offers the Analysis templates. So to be clear I can not use the Server Installation CD to avoid spending the 50 bucks?

Yes you can use the installation CD from the server, however you still need to be licensed to use the software.

You'll need to spend the 50 bucks.

What workstation components ?

If its client connectivity tools, For winforms apps ?

I think its free, but you pay a license for client connectivity to the server.

If its to develop apps or SSIS then you can purchase Developer edition which runs on a workstation. I just got 2008 edition. You can get it here

Click on "SOFTWARE" Under the browse category.

Like I already said, you need to purchase Developer Edition at a minimum.

Yes you are right, to install developer edition. But if you need client connectivity tools using winforms, you just need to install the client tools.

I am not sure if its been changed the later release.

It doesn't matter if it's winforms or not. You still need to purchase a license to access the database server.
