Ok, I need to create a job to run nightly, but am having difficulty trying to conceptualize the best approach. We are wanting to test all of our backups over the span of about 2 months (doing half dozen or so per day) without repeating. The suggestion I was given was to randomly select the servers for the day, somehow mark them (so they aren't chosen again) restore them, repeat each day until the entire list has been restored. Then clear the list and start over.Is there a better way to do this? We have a db that keeps track of all the db's in our system. I don't know why it would necessarily need to be randomized. Basically, I am not sure the best way to go about implementing this project. Anyone set up something like this?---------------------------Working until "the morning sun sets the midnight sky on fire"!

I agree random seems unnecessary. Some questions which would make random worse than ordered:Are particular servers busy / not busy on particular days? Is there scope to choose servers by work-load on particular days? Also are servers doing related / seperate tasks - is it better to ensure that some servers are not tested simultaneously or some should be?

Not really. There is some discussion about limiting the amount of data restored per day...basically making it a variable number of DBs restored dependent only on size...but at this point the DBs are just to be restored from the backup server(not from the production server) daily until they have all been restored once and then start over. The "restore" servers are dedicated to this project. At this point, load is not much of a concern. The goal is to ensure the backups are successful.---------------------------Working until "the morning sun sets the midnight sky on fire"!

work backwards? The more important desirable backups from your company's point of view are probably the most recent ones.Charlie===============================================================Msg 3903, Level 16, State 1, Line 1736The ROLLBACK TRANSACTION request has no corresponding BEGIN TRANSACTION |

They are all backed up daily. They just want to test the backups to verify they are good. There are a few that will be tested weekly, but the rest will be on a 60 day rotation. The test restores will be done from the latest backup.---------------------------Working until "the morning sun sets the midnight sky on fire"!
