There is nothing like Jr.DBA has to know these things & Sr.DBA has to know these things. As a DBA(Jr or Sr) you have to know some basic things.

1.Installation & Configuaration
2.About databases
3.Backup & Restore
4.Performance Tuning
5.Monitoring

when you start working, you will know lot of things .

I'm sure the responsibilities will vary from company to company.

The JR dbas I've had in the past typically spend a majority of their time in a ticketing system working on the "low hanging fruit" type of issues that are easy and quick to finish, but can take a lot of time to finish due to sheer quantity. This gives them a good grasp on the types of issues a Sr level DBA might have to plan for in the future.

They have monitored the event logs for abnormal error messages, these can range from failed disk messages to security violations. They should be able to remedy some of these, more advanced issues they should know to alert Sr staff of a potential problem.

Also, they should be working with a mentor/Sr DBA to get ramped up on performance troubleshooting and activly monitoring the database. Performance tuning both physical and logical database designs can be considered an art that will take time to grasp fully. Ideally a Jr DBA would have someone they could work with daily to get a handle on these concepts as well as other critical Sr DBA type responsibilities.

I'd say Performance Tuning is often the main one.
