hi folks...

New DBA here, getting my feet wet. I moved into this position from a development background and I am trying to bone up on some basic management skills, etc...

In the short term, my dept has a budget allocated for our DB environment which will disappear in about a month if not spent - you know the deal. I am interested in any recommendation you may have regarding 3rd party monitoring / analysis tools. I have been using the native tools in SQL Server (05 mostly). We are moving toward 08 sometime in the next few months for some environments, initially with just SRS. At any rate, are there any "must haves" out there?

I have some experience with the DBArtisan suite over Oracle DBs (about four yrs ago). Basically I am looking for something to help monitor the general health of the environment and the DBs.

Thanks for any suggestions!

There is a multitude of tools available, see RedGate or Quests spectrum of products. Personally though, I prefer the (free) dashboard approach... download the free performance dashboard from microsoft:

and over time adapt it to your own specific needs.

Check Tivoli Monitoring . You may find it's something already existing in other aspects of your organisation , it has an agent for SQL Server
