Hi Guys, I am looking for some general advice from the experts really. I have started working in a Junior SQL Server DBA role and was wondering what advice you guys can give me, I have good knowledge of SQL Server itself but little of windows server, could anyone recomend book or training or just areas that i should be looking at getting knowledge of to be better at my job.

Cheers

1) Ask whoever your senior is to show you some of the routine windows admin stuff they have to do.

2) Know your hardware and network infrastructure. If you work in a company with a dedicated infrastructure unit this might not be so important but it's always good to know what the boxes are made of and how the connect to your network.

Apart from that: it really depends on your environment.

For instance Active directory could be either totally pervasive and useful for you to know, or completely pointless depending on your network.

Backups..... are probably important for you to know. System as well as database backups.

But... Ask your seniors is probably the best first step.

Cheers for that Charlie, I've been in a review of my work and did request something along these lines so now I'm going to be having regular sessions with the IT service delivery manager to go though the basics that i need to know dependent on what the senior dba thinks is appropriate

Should be very useful
