Hi all,

I am wanting to become a DBA. I know that sql 2008 is out but finding study material is a pain. However sql 2005 study material is abundant. I am wanting everyones insight on if I should pursue the 2005 mctip track and then upgrade to the 2008 or just hold off and get the 2008 cert.

Thanks all,
Mark

If the cost of taking both 2005 and 2008 tests is not a consideration, I would suggest doing 2005. My guess is that eighty to 90 percent of the things you learn for 2005 would be applicable to 2008 as well, so the effort is not wasted. Most of the production systems have not yet migrated to SQL 2008, so certification and skills in SQL 2005 would be applicable to the majority of current production systems.

Having said that, in my experience, employers do not seem to give much weight to the MS certifications. Admittedly, this is my subjective opinion, and I wish it were otherwise, because I am pretty good at taking tests, but a miserable performer in technical interviews.

Hi

MCDBA certification is developed for those IT professionals want to implement, administer and design SQL Server database. MCDBA is an advanced level IT certification for those who develop physical database and services by using the Transact SQL, can handle and sustain database, build up and manage security, examine and optimize database and set up and configure SQL Server.

MCDBA certification requirements
To get MCDBA certification, the candidate should have passed the three compulsory Core exams and one optional exam. For the core exam the candidate will take one exam each for SQL Server Administration, SQL Server Design and Networking Systems.
It is recommended that you should get some help from other resources because the course books are not match up closely to the actual exam. You can prepare your exam by taking practice test from certpaper.com. This website offers free DBA questions and answers with practice test.

Core Exams of MCDBA
Choose one administration exam 70-228: SQL Server 2000 Administration, one SQL Design Exam 70-229: SQL Server 2000 Design, One Networking Systems exam:70-290: Windows Server 2003 Environment, 70-291: Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure and 70-215: Windows 2000 Server
MCDBA certification elective exams:
You will choose one elective exam from eight elective exams

Infact i think the 2000 exams are getting retired soon

Personally I haven't certified since SQL 7 and am studying for the 2008 certs now. I chose to skip 2005 because 2008 study material is now emerging. If it's an issue of time, as in you need your cert right away then 2005 is the obvious choice. If you don't mind doing it over the course of 6-9 months then I would stick with 2008. For example the study guide for Designing and Implementing became available 2/18 on Amazon. The guide for Developing will be out in May. There is plenty of info on the requirements for these tests on Microsoft's site and you can easily pick a topic and find information on it either online or through BOL if you use the Express 2008 edition. Now as for the weight of the certs that sunitabeck mentioned I somewhat agree. I've seen plenty of DBA's who were certified and were just plain aweful. However, I do a lot of resume screening for our company (I'm a DBA or a Developer depending on the contract I work on) and I notice when people have a cert and when they don't. It at least shows me that they're trying to stay current on technologies and that they put the time in. Sometimes that's the extra weight in their favor over someone who is equal in experience but not certified.

Dumps are cheating. They're questions taken from the exam and posted online in violation of the NDA on the exams. Using or distributing braindumps can get your certs revoked, permanently.

Don't use dumps. You will easily be caught in a technical interview because you didn't take the time to learn it. Everyone knows that some people cheat on these tests and use dumps. These people are easily weeded out and then shunned.

There should be breakdowns of the material covered on the MS site - http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/certifications.mspx
