Hello Experts !I was here couple of times before when I had to re-tool my sql scripts from Oracle to Sqlserver.I recently got laid off & in my search for some meaningful IT job, I came across a position that just fits what I have done so far & tommorow, Im scheduled for an interview.I used sql query analyser extensively in the dev environment & wrote bunch of validation queries to check for record matches/mismatches, counts, etc etc and never went beyond creating stored procedures & views. I never wrote any packages nor created DTS scripts. Now, the problem at hand is that this job description has SSIS & SSRS & these are ofcourse not what I worked on. I looked up on MSDN's Sqlserver developer center & there they have all of these but they are too bulky & are meant to be read in a leisurely fashion. So, how do I cope with any questions/challenges that I may run into ? Can someone give me any ideas as what is this SSIS/SSRS & what can be done in SSIS/SSRS & is there any place online that can give me a brief idea about these things that they are talking about ? regards,Robert.

SSIS is Integration Services and is the new version of DTS. You can use this kind of tool to import/export data, transform data, and other things.SSRS is Reporting Services. It's just Microsoft's reporting solution. You can compare it to Crystal Reports. If you don't have any knowledge about these technologies, then I'd suggest not "BS"ing your way through the interview. It will be very obvious that you don't have the experience if they ask the right questions. If you are at all interested in this job, I would be upfront about your lack of experience in those arenas but that you are very willing to learn and emphasize that perhaps you are a quick study. Make sure that you are strong in the areas that you do have experience in.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog"Let's begin with the premise that everything you've done up until this point is wrong."

Tara,I had that thought that I should come out clean about this SSIS & SSRS. However demands of daily life including mortgage are weighing down heavily & I just cannott afford to loose this job as there are hardly any seen around here. Im not even sure if I have any more integrity left in me if I go ahead & BS my way into this and I guess I dont know what Im going to do.BTW, can I atleast tell them that I used any part of SSIS & SSRS that has only SQL in it? (None of this flat file data import or reporting related) Do you know what I mean here ?Please advice !regards,Robert.

I don't think you could claim any experience with SSIS or SSRS if you've never touched them and instead only have the SQL development experience. It would depend on the questions asked by the person interviewing you though. We grill the people interviewing here, so we quickly figure out if you're a good candidate here. Your interview may be different in that they don't go in depth into those technologies. It just depends. It does not take very long at all to get even beginner knowledge of either product. Both come with samples and have a wizard. Unfortunately your interview is tomorrow, which does not give you much time to get it installed and play with it a little. It's too bad that you don't have a couple of days to get a tiny bit familiar with it.Tara KizerMicrosoft MVP for Windows Server System - SQL Serverhttp://weblogs.sqlteam.com/tarad/Subscribe to my blog"Let's begin with the premise that everything you've done up until this point is wrong."

Does it need the sqlserver engine ? When Im googling, Im getting myriad searches & honestly, Im not able to wrap my head around this. | OI!!! Mr Robert NewToSSIS, if you can't do this job you just found, give me the details, cos as a Crystal Reports and SSRS guru I can do it & I've been lookin' for a contract in the UK for months! Maybe I can hitch a ride back to America with the Obamas when they're done with the G20?If you don't like this stuff, why don't you stick with ORACLE? There's loads of that about? I regret skipping it! |

If u have your interview then start learning about SSRS if u ever worked on Crystal Reports....mean this is easy to learn mean the few basic reports and some few features,,,so you just get basic idea in only one week about that SSRS so if u have interviews after a week then STAR Studying Now on this. Its not a very hard task to do u just know how u want your data to be shown. So start learning..well u must have knowledge about SSRS and SSIS now days if u want to comtinue work in SQL Server Thanks..

Hey Everyone,I just got back from the interview & I think I did well when it came to the Oracle part & told them that I never really got into the workings of SSIS or SSRS. They told me that they have interviewed couple of other people who were just outstanding when it came to sqlserver but not so well with the Oracle part. Im not sure what else can I write here and I do feel very ashamed...regards,Robert.
