Could probably be true if you have a small environment with a limited amount of sql servers, a simple network setup, properly written DBA procedures, and of course: properly written applications. Right now I'm a DBA for one single database server with one single (very poorly written) application running against it and I have my hands full. The complexity increases quite fast though and at least in my opinion it doesn't take too much stuff to justify a full time DBA.- Lumbago |

| A skilled person can do both, but in large environments there's far too much work for one person to do both. Also, while it's true that a skilled person can do both, very few people have really in-depth knowledge of both areas. Last company I worked for had 9 DBAs and about 12 database developers and there was more work than they could handle.--Gail ShawSQL Server MVP |

| BUTwhat's the DIFFERENCE?It's doing SOMETHING for a database. Is a DBA in charge of hardware, adding hard disks? Is it writing new procedures? Build new apps? Write reports?Does a Developer SPEED up performance by rewriting queries and adding indexes? Fix problems? Do Backups?I never know where to put my issues in this forum - T-SQL, or Administration? |
