There are SO many factors involved here.1. Disk IO subsystem; HDD type (EATA, SATA, iSCSI, SCSI, SSD)?2. How many records are there in the table?3. How big is record size?4. How many processors and how many cores?5. Off load hours or on load hours?6. Are there other routines/processes running?7. And so on, and so on... E 12°55'05.63"N 56°04'39.26" |

Or, if you prefer the short answer; 1 hour, 15 minutes and 44 seconds. E 12°55'05.63"N 56°04'39.26" |

Please tell us you did not honestly believe that as the absolute answer??? Methinks the post was made with a bit of sarcasm. If you took that as fact, you may be in the wrong career....If you still want to be a DBA, see Peter's 2nd response.Terry-- Procrastinate now! |

No sarcasm here. Only informational. It takes the time mentioned to rebuild index on our 500GB database.I do think OP meant a 500GB table... E 12°55'05.63"N 56°04'39.26" |

Hi Terry,I did't get a chance to work on large databases. I am facing the questions inthe interviews. Just wanted to know the time to takes for rebuild index on large databases. Ofcourse I know it depends on many factors, but the interviewer wants short and staright answer.Peso,Thanks once again! |

If the interviewer only wants a short answer to this question, any time estimate is valid. How can the interviewer contradict the time given? E 12°55'05.63"N 56°04'39.26" |

It just hit me!This is exactly as the movie with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson; "A Few Good Men".Interviewer: "How much time it will take to rebuild the index of 500GB database?"You: "You can't handle the truth!"Also see http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=46783Pretend CIO is the interviewer and DBA is you.
