By finding the cause of the slow performance and resolving it.

It may be hardware, it may be system configuration, it may be poorly written queries, it may be inadequate indexing, it may be bad table design. It's likely to be a combination of all.

If you use Firefox, go download the Clippings addin. I currently have 14 different 'standard' answers loaded, everything from "Please post table definitions, sample data and desired output." through to common code snippets and links to articles on common problems.

You're most welcome to use my answer as a standard reply for these types of questions if you wish.
