I have a maintenance plan which run nightly to check db integrity and backup my system databases.

My question is ; Is it ever necessary to rebuild / reorganise indexes or update statistics in the system databases?

All comments / suggestions appreciated

Thanks Sodeep.

Slightly off topic but if i rebuild / reorganise the indexes on my tables is it necessary to rebuild statistics or are they rebuilt as part of the rebuild / reorganise?

Rebuilding indexes will take care of updating statistics with Full Scan.

Rebuilding may be useful in MSDB, especially for things like the job history and backup history tables. Not for the other system DBs though. Master's seldom changed (new logins, new databases, new linked servers). Model should never be changed. TempDB should only have temp tables.

Thanks Sodeep / Gail

Your replies are appreciated.

I'll amend my maintenance plans accordingly.
