I’m currently working for the school district and was recently asked “Why don’t I take some SQL classes” to move ahead in the school district. Since, I’ve been thinking about taking SQL/Database courses for this same reason – to advance my career but don’t have any prior database or programming knowledge.

I wanted to take a bold step and ask some complete strangers what their thoughts were about taking SQL classes for someone who is a bit on the creative side and who loves music/art, and that sort of thing? Also, I’d like to ask you what you thought about either furthering a career as a Database Administrator vs. a Database Developer? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Learning anything in the technical field will certainly advance your career and you salary… Learning SQL is a great thing to have if you’re going into the database field or any type of Analyst field… as it can be very helpful to create your own queries to make your job easier to do… I would say it would be a good move.

Many years ago, I worked at a job that asked me to learn more about SQL and database administration. They gave me the option to buy a course for me to work through on my own or to send me to some classes. I chose the course to work through on my own, thinking it would be faster, easier, etc., but hindsight being 20/20, now I wish I had gone to the classes. It seems that more can be learned in a classroom setting with a teacher who can answer questions, give immediate feedback, etc. versus trying to learn it on your own. Not sure if that help or not -- good luck, though!
