Is it possible for Reporting Services 2008 and Reporting Services 2005 to live on the same server? I'm leaning towards no, since RS 2008 runs it's own mini copy of IIS and RS 2005 require IIS. I did find some docs that would let RS 2005 run with IIS 7, with IIS 6 compat modes turned on, but are those going to interfere with the RS 2008 web service and the URL structure? This would be on a WIn2008 x64 box.Thanks. |

Interestingly enough, I posted a similar question in the Admin forum. I just purchased the developer's edition of SS 2008 and plan to install it on my home PC which at the moment is running the evaluation version of SQL Server 2005, including SSRS and Report Manager. Though in my case, the 2005 version will be expiring soon and I will be completely removing it, but the remnants of the 2005 installation regarding fine tuning some windows features for IIS and others to get SSRS to install and Report Manager to run will still be lurking.Would you mind sharing links to what you have found, it would be appreciated.Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |

I have both on the same server. One thing to note is that, the objects created by Visual Studio 2005 cannot be placed in Report Manager 2008. You have to convert them. One thing I don't know well enough yet is the VS 2008. It seems to me to be much richer and complicated so when I am doing a new report, I code it in VS 2005 and just then call it from VS 2008 to make the conversion. As a caveat everything I say must be taken with a pound of salt as I am a very new newbie to this platform and enviroment, having spent my entire working life in IBM land. |

Adam,I would not down play your work experience, you know more than you give yourself credit. I am in a similar situation, working since 1973, and the bulk of my background in HP3000 mainframes. I have spent the last two years studying SS 2005 and all the components.Right now, the 2005 evaluation copy on my laptop has expired, so I purchased the 2008 developer's edition, I cannot get it to install. I get some errors. I posted this on one of the MSDN forums and some MS analyst is looking at it.Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |

Savoir, thanks and good luck with the install. At our place, they had a license for 2008 so someone else installed it. I am trying to attach myself to this new world but often feel like I am just scratching the surface but hopefully over time, I will learn something. |

Adam,There are a lot of very good books out there that you can buy and study. I started with the Microsoft Press Training Kits, then moved on to a series, and the publisher is Osborne Press? Anyway, the author Brian Larsen has a few books out and the series is entitled: "Microsoft SQL Server 2005/08, Step by Step Guide". Add to that Business Intelligence, SSIS and/or Reporting Services. I think there are a few other books in the series. The other author is Ashwani Bandi(?), that was the SSIS text. These texts are excellent. There is a series for 2005 and 2008. Of course these are on the side of Business Intelligence Development. Larsen was employed at Microsoft and was a major contributor and architect on the Reporting Services component.I studied three texts, Delivering Business Intelligence, Integration Services and Reporting Services. I highly recommend them. They are each worth the $60 purchase price.Just go to any major book seller website like Barnes and Noble and search for "Brian Larsen".Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish. |
