are you using sql 2005? how is data stored in your table? is it a self mapped table?

I think what is being asked for is the table structure that the hierarchy is stored in.

But, if you know how to query the table to get the hierarchy, you can use the ROW_NUMBER function to get distinct paths or you can use a GROUP BY clause.
