I have the following table:
Item Date
A 2015-01-02
A 2015-03-01
A 2015-02-17
B 2015-01-07
B 2015-03-20
C 2015-01-02
C 2015-03-17
C 2015-01-14
C 2015-02-02
D 2015-03-25
E 2015-02-09
E 2015-02-09
Is it possible to get a list with only one of each item and then the latest date possible?

Do you mean:
Select item,max(date) from yourtable group by item
?
