 What does repairing an access DB actually do ?

I am just wondering what is actually done when an Access database is repaired. Have found plenty of ways to do it but not what it is actually doing ?

Also, missing from that thread, I believe, is that when Access (A pig in a dress) moves data around, in needs temp space to hold results, ect...AND NEVER CLEANS UP AFTER ITSELF (see pig reference).

There's actually some good points in the thread...
