Can I query against tables in different databases? I am not a programmer and I'm new to SQL Server-- previously worked some in Oracle where reporting against different schemas within an Oracle database instance was customary and trivial.

Yes you can!

Instead of

SELECT * FROM mytable

use

SELECT * from DatabaseName.Owner.mytable
