Dear All,
at present all our servers are running with sql server 2000. we are planned to upgrade to sql server 2005 standard edition. what is the approach i need to follow?
can i directly go for installation of sql server 2005, and then use copy database wizard? this is a production environment, and we even not give 5 min of downtime. please help me in this regard

If you can't have any down time your best approach is to do a side-by-side upgrade. You install SQL Server 2005 as a separate instance on the production machine and then backup databases from SQL Server 2000 and restore under SQL Server 2005 instance. Once databases are in 2005 and you have tested everything to make sure it all works properly under 2005 then you can update all applications to use the databases on the 2005 instance and shut down the 2000 instance.

Not allowing for any downtime for the upgrade is a HUGE mistake in my opinion.

Have you already purchased new hardware for SQL 2005?

Thank you very much Zack for giving so much clarity. but one thing i can't understand that "Not allowing for any downtime for the upgrade is a HUGE mistake in my opinion."how can you justify this.....

and sodeep, we have purchased software only. is there any extra hardware needed for this?

Stuff happens during upgrades. In a perfect world things would upgrade without any problems but that is not always the case. I'm in a similar situation as you regarding upgrading from 2000 to 2005 and our customer doesn't want to plan for any downtime. After spending more time than I thought was necessary explaining why I thought we should have some scheduled downtime they have agreed with me. Our upgrade will be done side-by-side. We will upgrade the test server first and then after testing things out to make sure the upgrades work properly we'll repeat the process on the production server. Good luck with your upgrade!
