I am trying to open a .dbf file using openrowset and I get this error msg:
Cannot create an instance of OLE DB provider "VFPOLEDB" for linked server "(null)".

Isn't it possible to open a table without creating a linked server? I would rather not do so unless I have to.

I am running SQL server 2005. I installed the most recent release of vfpoledb.

Here is my select:

select * from
openrowset(
'VFPOLEDB',
'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\';'';'',
'Select * from zip'
) as x

Did you try with linked server anyway?

No. VFPOLEDB does not appear on the provider list. Should it?

How can you make openrowset work if it's not in provider list?

How do I add it to the list?? Note: Prior to writing my initial post I installed the Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Visual Foxpro 9.0.

If you can use it in openrowset, you can use it for linked server too.
