When i create a report i add a data source and the report runs. If i add another report targeting another database i do the same and the dataset resides within the report.

When i deploy a report i think it adds this data source to the data source folder.

What i dont understand is the purpose of having a shared datasource for reports or even why its available as a folder when you access a reporting services site - i know it can be hidden but want to know how these are used in case it helps me with a better solution for our organisation?

Thanks
