Hi,

My vb client is a loop that contantly accessing the SQL server. What is/are the better ways for the client to detect that the SQL server is up and running, before proceeding.

Currently, if my SQL statements executed and returns an error, I assume that the SQL Server is down.

Thanks.

Use SMO/DMO to get list of network servers that are available currently and check whether your server is in the list. Google SMO or DMO. I think you can use anyone of the object model.

In your connectionstring, set connection timeout to a low value, 2 second or so.
