Constraint Violating Yak Guru

As everyone is seeing, we're living through some tough very economic days; jobs are being lost across the nations, consumer spending is rapidly decreasing, credit is (very) tight, homes being foreclosure and etc and etc.

On conversations with some people specially with my co-workers, some say that IT will never go under and even if some of us loose our jobs we'll be able to get another one really fast because there's a high demand for IT out there(I disagree with that), others are scared as companies are not meeting their numbers and the risk to loose their jobs are getting higher everyday.

Here where I live (Fort Lauderdale, FL), things are kind of OK so far, I still getting some emails/calls from recruiters which could be considered as a thermometer that things aren't that bad YET. I heard that companies are closing down or shutting part of its operations down here such as DHL (their American HQ is down here in Fort Lauderdale), Circuit City closing a few stored here locally and some other smaller and bigger companies that I can't recall at the moment are also going through the same tough scenario.

Since we have people from pretty much all geos on this board, I wanted to ask you all what is the impact (if any) of this whole economic crisis on you, your jobs, your company, your city/town and family, and any other thoughts you might have on this. I'm curious to know what some people working in smaller/bigger companies, on different sides of the country/planet and on different industries have to say and how is everyone being impacted by this crisis.

Thanks,
-Igor

well for now here in slovenia, IT hasn't felt the recession yet. other branches have though. like car, ski, food stuff, etc...
My company is owned by a german comany (we're part of thier IT), so despite Germany being deep into recession we haven't felt it yet.
fingers crossed though... don't want to jinx it

As it is near christmas, it is difficult to tell as there are never as many contracts around this time of the year, but it does seem quieter at the moment than usual, which is a bit bad as I am looking for another contract.

Sure it won't be too much of a problem getting a contract to start in the new year though, so not too worried yet.

I'm very worried about this economy. Layoffs are already happening everywhere in the US. I read recently that USPS is laying off thousands of people, and that it is the first time ever that they have had to do it.

I'm worried that my brother isn't going to be able to find a job/career when he graduates from college next semester.

I'm grateful that I got out of the stock market at the right time (dumb luck).

i took voluntary redundancy (and quite a healthy payout) from a software company in the UK a few weeks ago (financial sector so no big surprise ) but found another job very quickly. had 3 interviews, got 3 offers and started my new job this week, wahoo!

Lots of jobs out there but more CV's than ever before too apparently, so i'm told.

I work for a US based telecommunication company. Company's performance has been ok this year, excellent if we compare it to the ones in news.
Haven't heard of any pink slips been handed over in my company atleast.

But in this region, I know a lot of companies which are struggling to survive. Good companies are not hiring, many have post poned joining dates for their new recruits and some plan on no increments for this year. News on yahoo is some companies are asking all their employees to take 3 days off. That to me is the work of one wicked new MBA recruit. And I agree with some of you here, I think the worst is yet to come.
In particular,I disagree with the bail out packages that almost all governments seem to be pulling out from somewhere. It'll make things worse in time to come if you ask me.
Indian markets have been affected more than most of the european and US markets. I don't know why they say Asia will recover before Europe or US does from this crisis. Realty stocks are struggling to survive. An alcohol company's stock is my only hope, talking about my investments :(

Here in Hyderabad, hikes are very less and layoffs are going on....
very big MNC's given the hike of 6% which is highest. and 2.5 is the minimum. previously the maximum is 45% and the minimum is 25%.

and one surprised thing is tara madam's brother is searching for job?????? really surprising because she is that much expert, and he might also learned a lot on DBA. for DBA's as per my knowledge, in india there is huge demand. Madam, sned him india just with 10% of your knowldege, he will get more money and good job than US.

The company I work for just let 2 people go (we're about 20 alltogether now) and company turnover has dropped close about 40% in the last 3 months. I'm working on a fixed length contract until 1st of April but I have allready started sending applications and going to an interview on monday...wish me luck!
