I would look at the following:

grab a copy of "How to be an Exceptional DBA" by Brad McGehee
http://www.red-gate.com/products/sql_backup/offers/exceptional_dba_awards.htm?utm_source=dba_awards&utm_medium=button&utm_content=being_exceptional&utm_campaign=sqlbackup

Visit websites like these often:
http://www.sqlteam.com/
http://www.sqlservercentral.com/
http://www.sql-server-performance.com/

Get experience with the product. Work through examples. Solve problems. Try to help others, and learn yourself.

Hope that gets you started.

You can start with performance turning (analyzing the query execution plan, index, etc.). Also you can volunteer for DBA tasks.
