 best way to manage sysmaintplan_logdetail

I have a table in the MSDB DB It is rather large. What is the best way to delete some of the records with little impact on the production server. Similar to... the sproc that gets rid of backup history...

Modify your maintenance plans so that they store less log data.

How about cleaning up those old records in there now? or will modifying the maintenance plan clear out those old records?
