Hi,

I'm very new to SQL and am learning SSRS at the moment. The company I'm working for has SQL 2005 Std licenses, and I want to start using SSRS to provide some reporting capabilities to our customers, who currently use Access.

My question is: is it worth sticking to SQL 2005 and SSRS 2005 as they are already on the server and ready to go?

Or would it be better for me (better as in easier to learn to do reports, make reports look nicer and more functional, etc) to install 2008 Express edition on the server too, and use SSRS 2008 to build reports that access the 2005 Std database?

Would it cause any problems? We can't use the 2008 Express database (or upgrade to 2008 Std because - well - money is tight), because I want to use Analysis Services provided in 2005 Std at some stage and integrate it to some reports.

Thanks,
Cody

I would just use RS 2005. See if there are any features that you require and are missing in 2005 and that are provided in 2008

You'll be absolutely fine with SSRS 2005. 2008 has some nice new things included, but 2005 does the job just nicely. Once you know that, you can move to 2008 without a problem.
