I need to change the passwords for our database. It is on a shared server. There are 5 users set up, and I know how to get to the Security/Users area, but then what? We're using MS SQL Server Management Express 2005. Really a newbie and need steps to follow...thanks.

In the Security/Logins section, just double click on the login and then modify the password in the screen that comes up. You can also do this with ALTER LOGIN (or sp_password but that's deprecated in 2005).

Tara, I found what the area you are talking about, but the login I've been using does not have administrator privileges. How do I login in as "SA" on a shared server? The person who managed this is no longer working on the project.

I'm not sure, would first try the one that the login I have uses - in other areas he used the same pw over and over.

When you are prompted for credentials when trying to connect to a server in Express's Management Studio, type in sa (or any other account with sufficient privileges) and the appropriate password. You could also try a Windows account and then use Windows authentication, if you have local admin on the database server.

Tara, thanks so much for your help. The sa login didn't work through the Express login screen, so I called the hosting company and talked to someone else about it - they said the pw needed to be changed in two places and it could be done through their admin panel. They don't grant sa privileges on the shared server. Everything is working ! Hopefully, this thread will help others.

You're welcome. I didn't realize you were using a hosted SQL Server.
