| Hi there,I'm thinking of starting a new career in Database field. Basically I have no computer programing or IT background, I'd appreciate if someone can give me some advise on these:-1. Job opportunities as DBA or DB developer in UK market (especially in London)2. Would you recommend to do self-learning (SQL server) or shall I enrol in a college (with expensive fees)?... which college you would recommend in London?3. Is MS SQL Server is the most widely used compared to others (eg: Oracle)? Many thanks!Neil |

| Since you have no background in computer programming, before you spend any money, I would recomend evaluating whether you have an aptitude and interest in programming. Programming is one of those things which either you love it, or you hate it. And, SQL is even more so in my opinion. To evaluate whether you will have fun learning and doing SQL, pick up a beginners book, and go through it. As you are going through it, do the examples and exercises in it. One of my favorite beginners books is Beginning SQL Server 2005 Programming by Robert Vieira. He has a sense of humor, and explains things pretty well.If you fall asleep reading the book, then that tells you something. If you can't wait to get a more advanced book when you are done with that book, then you know you have found your calling. If you are somewhere in between, do more research.Regarding your other questions: I don't know much about the job markets in London or UK, nor do I know the market penetration of Oracle vs SQL. |
