 installing sql server 2005

i have tried several times to install sql server 200 and 2005 to my xp and vista pc with no luck. It seems to install but when i go to services under manage my computer sql does not exist on the list? why won't it load?

What edition have you tried to install?

It probably only installed the client tools, such as Enterprise Manager (2000) and Management Studio (2005). You won't get the engine unless you install the proper edition, such as Developer Edition.
