I had a great time at the SQL Saturday event given by the AtlantaMDF group and hosted at Microsoft's Alpharetta/Atlanta office. Joe Celko gave a lunchtime presentation on nested sets and tossed out this great aside (words to this effect):

"We should add constraints to tables to deal with evil users...well, not evil, but stupid users we WISH were evil. You can negotiate with evil. Have you ever tried to negotiate with stupid?"

He even made fun of how everyone thinks he's a nice guy in person, even those who hate him from his newsgroup posts. If you do get a chance to see him present I definitely recommend it, he has an infinite number of great stories.

And a big congratulations to Stuart and the AtlantaMDF crowd for pulling off such a great event. If you're in or near the Atlanta GA area and wish to learn more about them:

yeah i heard good stuff about it on twitter:
quote:

Celko loosely stated "I wish users were evil, you can figure out and negotiate with evil...can't negotiate with stupid" :)

that was a good one!

rob: did he say anything new about nested sets?

He showed an example of converting adjacency to nested sets using CTEs, and a couple of updates since the earlier edition of SQL for Smarties, but nothing really different from what's in his books. The slide deck will be on the SQL Saturday site pretty soon.

Is the ebook version of "SQL Smarties" available (PDF format)?

Could be, I only have the 2nd edition dead tree. There's a 3rd edition out, it may have a PDF with it. The publisher is Morgan Kauffman, check their site for e-book availability. He also has a book entirely on trees if you really want to get into the detail.

I don't have the option to see excellent SQL speakers except once in a blue moon, don't have lots of regional conferences or code weekends, etc.

Down in my neck of the woods pretty much the only way I'll get to attend a local SQL event is if I organise it myself.

I've seen Kalen down in Reading. And of course several of the UK MVPs at SQLBits. Still trying to persuade the gaffer to send me to PASS each year....

I was born in the UK, but I haven't lived there in over 28 years. I was 4 years old when parents came to SA.

Get organizing something for the summertime down there. Maybe enough of us northern hemisphere people will be able to BS our way past the bean counters, and drop in on you ;-).
