 query execution reduces disk space

I run a select query for a heavy table in a user database (for which datafiles are in d drive). i suprised to see hard disk space reduces down by down in c drive where sql server is installed.
i dont know what is happening
please advice

Have a look at the properties of the tempdb for example.
Maybe the MDF and LDF are stored on c drive?

Thanks for reply webfred

First thing i have detached and attached the tempdb to d drive

the size of disk shrinks while execution of query and again come back to the orignal size
