SERIOUS QUESTION

What's the differentce between T-SQL / Development
and DBA work?

I can do both, and I like 'em. This site has areas for both, and there are seperate jobs for them. What's the difference?

Racing car driver / Car mechanic

Need both. A skilled person can do both

Could probably be true if you have a small environment with a limited amount of sql servers, a simple network setup, properly written DBA procedures, and of course: properly written applications. Right now I'm a DBA for one single database server with one single (very poorly written) application running against it and I have my hands full.

The complexity increases quite fast though and at least in my opinion it doesn't take too much stuff to justify a full time DBA.

A skilled person can do both, but in large environments there's far too much work for one person to do both. Also, while it's true that a skilled person can do both, very few people have really in-depth knowledge of both areas.

Last company I worked for had 9 DBAs and about 12 database developers and there was more work than they could handle.

BUT

what's the DIFFERENCE?

It's doing SOMETHING for a database. Is a DBA in charge of hardware, adding hard disks? Is it writing new procedures? Build new apps? Write reports?

Does a Developer SPEED up performance by rewriting queries and adding indexes? Fix problems? Do Backups?

I never know where to put my issues in this forum - T-SQL, or Administration?

Developers - writing queries, writing views, designing tables (maybe), developing stored procedures. Optimising stored procedures and queries.
DBAs - Backups, space, integrity checks, maintenance, disaster recovery, high availability, monitoring
