I downloaded SQL Server 2005 Express. How do I find the local server name to connect to from Management Studio Express? Thanks.

Have you instaled it?
it'll be the machine name, (local) or . if the default instance.
If it's a named instance then you will have specified name during install in whcase .\<instance name>

SSIS can be used in a similar way.

I tried my pc name (right click on My Computer and properties), "local", and pcname\SQLExpress. All returned "The server was not found or was not accessible", "Error 40-Could not open a connection to SQL Server". I used windows authentication. When I opened the Management Studio Express, there is no default instance. Can you please give me an example on \<instance name>? Thanks.

Try looking in the folder c:\program files\microsoft sql serverYou should find an indication of the instance name via folders arounf there.

Also have a look at the services to make sure it's started
You should find some SQL SERVER services with the instance name
