I have SQL Server 2005, installed about 4 years ago, on Windows XP. I have a backup from a SQL Server 2005 installed today from MS download site onto Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit laptop.

A backup from one version will not restore onto the other, although I can backup and restore with a third computer running SQL Server 2005 installed about 4-6 weeks ago.

Error message when I try to restore from the W7 64bit to my XP 32 bit
Restore failed for Server 'HPLAPTOP\SQLEXPRESS'. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlError: The backup set holds a backup of a database other than the existing 'Customer_database' database. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.Smo)

Of course, 'Customer_database' does exist and I can backup and restore it onto and off my XP laptop, and the Win7 64bit can do the same, but not one to the other.

What reason(s) might there be? Thank you.

Sounds like you just need to specify WITH MOVE ..., REPLACE in the RESTORE DATABASE command.
