hi
to empty the transaction log, I do this:
DUMP TRANSACTION BDI WITH NO_LOG
on SQL 2008, I have a syntax error:

how to write it on sql2008

DUMP has been deprecated for a few versions. We now use BACKUP. DUMP was for SQL Server 6.5 and lower, although it still worked for a few more versions.

But don't truncate the transaction log! Instead back it up. Consider switching your recovery model if you find yourself truncating the log.

You can do it with ALTER DATABASE or via the GUI (right click the database, properties, and then options). You'll likely want SIMPLE recovery model. But you do need to understand the different recovery models in order to pick the one that fits your needs.
