I'm going to be doing a very large update soon, and I would like to have some way of comparing the development database to the production database, to make sure that all changes have been pushed across properly, and everything is correct. Are there any built in utilities for SQL Server that do this, some form of third-party utility, or am I on my own with this one?

I prefer to write it myself and think it a good excercise.
If it's just structure then you can script both databases and compare using sourcesafe.

If you want a utility then if you look near the top of the screen there should be a link to sqlcompare (if not now then soon). You can download an evaluation copy to try before you buy.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.

I second the SQLCompare nod. It's not super fast, but it does a great job. I think that the Lockwood Tech one is supposedly faster, buit I've never used it. I own SQL Compare and it gets the job done.

I downloaded and am using SQL Compare right now. It's exactly what I was looking for. True, it is a bit slow(200 tables, 500 procs), but man, the information it shows, and the time it saves going through things manually is worth it.

I haven't tried it yet, but how realiable are it's change scripting features?

I haven't had any problems with SQL Compare's change scripts yet. I have used them numerous times. I do not use them to update production though since we update production using whatever is in VSS. I use SQL Compare to update our non-PROD environments when either I don't have time to figure out which VSS scripts need to be applied or maybe I'm just being lazy that day.

Same situation for me, I use the scripts in test builds to identify any differences in the VSS builds as compared to live and for synchronising test servers.

Do you either of you know if SQL Compare allows you to compare permissions between two databases? I see places in the application mentioning object permissions, and I have it set so that it should be working, but it doesn't pick up on any of the permissions I have, nor does it compare them. Is there anything special I need to do to make that aspect of the application work?

Also, do either of you have code that can take SQL Compare's list of procs to use for updating, and get those procs out of SourceSafe? I have a huge rollout, and would prefer to use my items from SS, but it would be a tremendously tedious task to select the 500 some odd objects I need to update.

If a permission exists on an object and you compare the object on another machine, just double click on the object if there is a difference between the two and you'll see the GRANT statement in there. Hope that makes sense.

To get your objects out of source safe, simply get latest version on all of the objects and put them into one directory on your hard drive. Then go to a cmd window, navigate to the directory with the objects and type: type *.* > C:\temp\DBObjects.sql

The above command will concatenate all of the files into one file named DBObjects.sql that will be put into the temp directory. *.* can be changed and so can the file name and path. Then just run DBObjects.sql on your production machine. Just make sure that when you do the type command that you don't put the DBObjects.sql file in the same directory as the VSS objects.

If your VSS scripts contain the DROP commands, then you don't have to worry about dropping the objects first. But if they don't, then do a mass delete on the stored procedures before you run the DBObject.sql file.

That's how I expected SQL Compare to work, but it doesn't seem to script out the permissions for my objects. I don't know if it's a bug with the program or what, but it just doesn't have the permissions information.

My problem is that I can't just do a get latest version, as there are quite a few items that are not ready for production yet, and changing those would cause things to go south real quick. I guess I'll just have to do it manually, or maybe write some code to work with the SS command line exe.

Can't you just compare the system tables in each database? just translate all possible ID's into actual object or user names, and GROUP BY all columns that should be compared. You would also skip columns like "create_Date" and such, that will definitely differ between the two databases.

i.e.,

select min(DB) as DB, col1, col2, col3
from
(
select 'database1' as DB,col1, col2, col3
from database1..sysobjects

union all

select 'database2' as DB, col1, col2, col3
from
database2..sysobjects
) A
group by col1, col2, col3
having count(*) <> 2

that will give you all differences in the sysobjects tables. then you can do the same for sysusers, syspermissions, etc.

As I think nigel said, doing this would be a great exercise ... if it'll work, that is! but I think it should.
