My partner is visiting Santa Barbara, CA for a week and needs some kind of wireless, lightweight solution for checking email.

Any suggestions?

Sam

I have a free web email account with:

http://go4.it/index.htm

that allows you to coonect to your POP3 mail servers you have with other ISP's. So all you need is a hotel/airport/cafe that has internet.

On devices I'm not sure cos I'm a UK resident.

Sam,

I use T-mobile's WiFi Hotspots (primarily in Starbucks). They have 4 listed in Santa Barbara. This assumes he already has a laptop and has or will buy a WiFi card.

If you're looking for devices, I know several people who swear by their Blackberry. There are also numerous Palm and Pocket PC PDAs with WiFi and web browsers.

We are leaning toward buying a lightweight laptop for this trip. There's a lot of gear, it's not business related, but contact is important.

Any thoughts on "really light or small" Windows XP laptops?

One of my associates has a small Gateway that is really lightweight. I'm guessing the screen is only 10". It fits inside a portfolio. If you can't wait that long for delivery, I think the Sony Vaio comes in a small, lightweight option.

I'm eyeing a SONY - It's pricey, but has a wide screen (good for editing long lines) and is 3.1 lb !

Gig 'o ram, 1 Ghz Centrino processor (not so fast), CD RW/DVD-R

Funny, I get a server error referencing the above URL.

Our president had one, a couple of bumps and crashed hard drive.
Warranty work took 6 weeks to return.
Two weeks later another drive went.
He tossed it in a pond.
Hope the fish get some use out of it.

Problem is it's a committee (of 2) decision. I'd get the Blackberry myself. The other half of the committee wants Windows.

It's warming up here in Maryland. How's the weather down there?

Fair enough, thought it was worth a mention.

The weather here is the opposite, funnily enough. Starting to get chilly. It's nice and sunny out, but not warm.
May is usually about the coldest month in Sydney, especially at night.

Damian

EDIT : Duh, I just noticed Mark had already mentioned the blackberry... stupid me

Look at the dell x300 (I thnk).
Pentium M - shouldn't be much different from the big laptops.

Sony do one at about half the weight but not as spec'd.
If it's just email why not a handheld or cybercafe's/hotel services.

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
